Levels of assault

common assault

• Common assault can be pushing, shoving, punches to head/body causing slight redness, no real pain.

A person cannot be arrested for 'commonly assaulting' you. He can be interviewed though if a complaint is recorded.

actual bodily harm

• Bruising, small cut/laceration to the skin, swelling to face/eyes etc, bleeding nose.

A person can be arrested for this level of assault

wounding

• More serious injury, broken bones, deep wounds, severe bruising, badly broken nose.

A person can be arrested for this level of assault, which carries a far greater penalty.
